The rail service between Christchurch and Picton will resume in December.
It was put on hold two years ago after the devastating Kaikoura earthquake.
KiwiRail used to carry 43-thousand passengers a year on the trip.
Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray says it's important for the town.
He says it's very timely as it comes nearly 12 months to the day since the road re-opened.
