Search and Rescue mission co-ordinator Mike Roberts says the 29-year-old Australian soldier was due back from Mount Aspiring on Monday, but activated his distress beacon a day later.
He says they believe the man left most of his gear behind for a quick climb, but became trapped by bad weather.
Roberts says although it's an awful situation, it's extremely lucky there are very experienced helicopter operators and alpine cliff rescuers on hand.
He says the searchers are ready to go out as soon as the dangerous weather clears.
