About 20 quarry workers and truck drivers are in for the long haul - as they strike after a breakdown in pay talks
3 August 2018
The workers are striking outside the Atlas Quarry site in Brynderwyn Hills,
in Northland.
They're calling for fair pay to match other companies in the industry, and
more assurance about work hours.
Some staff are required to be on call 88 hours a week, but are only
guaranteed work half of that time.
First Union's Jared Abbott says what the workers want isn't out of the
ordinary.
He says the union knows what's a fair rate in the industry.
He says, the workers' demands won't make the company uncompetitive.
