Day is four shots back from the lead at 10-under for the tournament after a one-under third round, while compatriot Marc Leishman is a further stroke back.
Both Day and Leishman have revealed former US PGA Tour player Australian Jarrod Lyle's decision to end cancer treatment and enter palliative care as the inspiration to try and win the tournament.
World number three Justin Thomas is three clear of Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter at 14-under the card.
