A beekeeping expert believes new keepers could be to blame for the lack of participation in Government bee surveys

The Ministry of Agriculture is urging keepers around the country to
participate in its annual survey to gain an insight into beekeeping practices.
Just a third of the estimated 8000 keepers took part in the last survey.
Life member of the National Beekeepers' Association Frank Lindsay says the
poor participation rate could be due to lack of awareness.
He says fifty percent of beekeepers are new to the industry and may only have
a couple of years' experience so they may not have the knowledge to complete
the surveys.
It's estimated there're around 900,000 hives throughout New Zealand as part
of a five billion dollar industry.
