The centre is designed to sleep fifty three patients at a time but it
regularly sleeps twelve more than that.
At times the unit becomes so inundated, patients are forced to sleep on
mattresses in offices around the building.
Interim Chief Medical Officer at Waikato Hospital Dr Rees Tapsell says it's
an ongoing issue and they're not alone.
He says this is a challenge services right across the country are facing and
in terms of accommodating acute need they're the last resort so when people
need their services it's important that they admit them and care for them.
