    Tokoroa residents are being urged to stay away from a fire, ignited by lightning


    Lightening struck a tree in the south Waikato town just before 7am.

    Kauri Street and West Parkdale Street are closed, as emergency services deal
    with the blaze, and a gas leak.

    About eight thousand lightning strikes have hammered the North Island the
    morning.

    MetService meteorologist David Miller says thunderstorms are concentrated on
    the west coast, with many occurring offshore.
