Pathologists are warning the likelihood of accurately detecting murder, could become more difficult
20 August 2018
Senior doctors claim the national Forensic Pathology Service is on the brink of collapse - and if it falls over - homicide cases could be missed.
They say the Ministry of Justice is proposing to dismantle the service, and fragment it over four different providers.
Regional forensic pathologist Dr Paul Morrow says the uneven distribution of specialists around the country, could mean serious crime autopsies are carried out by under-qualified forensic experts.
He says that could have major implications.
Morrow says it's possible the police investigation may fail, the wrong cause of death may be determined or a person could be wrongly accused of a crime.
