21 August 2018
The number of road deaths in Auckland last year rose to 56 - 20 more than in 2016. - and serious injuries increased by 24 per cent from 510 to 634.
As a result, Auckland Transport is installing six new red-light cameras at high-risk intersections, new safety measures at rail level crossings, and lower speeds around schools and town centres.
They include two pedestrian and cycle projects in the CBD, a new pedestrian crossing in the Glen Eden town centre, a signalised pedestrian crossing on Taharoto Road in Takapuna, and new traffic lights at a busy Wiri intersection.
