A first under the three strikes law
A first under the three strikes law
21 August 2018
A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to the maximum possible prison sentence of seven years.
It's the first time the High court has imposed a maximum non-parole sentence under the three strikes law.
Hayze Waitokia has 14 previous convictions, including six for violent offending.
He appeared in court this time for stabbing a man in the leg, after suspecting him of stealing his phone.
He was earlier sentenced to home detention and three years imprisonment.
He's considered at high risk of reoffending, and the court says there's no clear and convincing case to not use the three strikes regime.
