Resource consent has been granted to allow dredging of the harbour, and expansion of the container terminal land at Te Awaparahi Bay.
Chief Executive Peter Davie says these two developments are crucial for the port to grow Canterbury's trade.
The dredging programme will deepen and extend the harbour - allowing for larger container ships.
LPC will reclaim an extra 24 hectares of land and construct a new 700 metre container wharf.
Freight volumes are expected to double in the next 15 years.
