Poor diet is the number one cause of bad health in New Zealand but a fresh
bid to regulate children's lunch boxes could change that.
Health researches are joining the call for a national health food policy to
be adopted by our schools.
It would include similar menus as those seen in our hospitals - heavy on
fruit and vege and low in sugar and fatty foods.
Auckland University Nutrition researcher Cliona Ni Mhurchu
says packed lunches are tricky to monitor, but
it's important parents and schools get it right.
She says what they're proposing is having standards where schools are
supporting the healthy eating method - so standards not sanctions.
