The magnitude 8.1 quake hit about 10 to 4 at a depth of 669 kilometres.
It was centred 123 kilometres east south east of Suva.
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management has assessed the information, and its initial assessment is that it's unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand.
