Hard up jurors can apply for more money than the standard 62-dollars a day

Hard up jurors can apply for more money than the standard 62-dollars a day

The Ministry of Justice says while it has no plans to increase the daily fee for being on a jury, those who'd suffer financial hardship can ask for extra.

The issue's back in the headlines, after a man claimed he'd not be able to pay rent, if he was selected for a trial - and be paid well below the minimum wage for his time.

Employers must allow people to attend jury service, but aren't obliged to pay them for the time they spend away.

Ministry spokesperson, Renee Smith, says the attendance fee is not intended to replace wages.
