Students from low decile schools are unlikely to become doctors, lawyers or engineers, a Weekend Herald report shows

Students from low decile schools are unlikely to become doctors, lawyers or engineers, a Weekend Herald report shows

The paper reveals only one in 100 entrants into elite university courses comes from the poorest families.

One university took just one decile one entrant into its engineering course in five years, compared to 500 from decile 10 students.

Universities New Zealand chief Chris Whelan says students from deprived areas aren't getting the needed grades or completing NCEA Level 3.

He says poverty and ethnicity are both linked to inequality, as Maori and Pasifika students from low decile schools have less than a 30 percent chance of going to uni.
