Director Glenn Weiss proposed to his girlfriend while accepting his Emmy Award on Monday (17.09.18)

The 57-year-old producer stunned the audience at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre when he sent a heartfelt message to his partner Jan Svendsen as he picked up the prize for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for his coverage of last year's Oscars

Glenn dedicated his win to his mother, who passed away a few weeks ago and said: "Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan.

"Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And mom was right, don't ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife."

Jan wept and was given a standing ovation by stars including Leslie Jones, Javier Bardem, Claire Foy - who could be seen wiping away a tear - and Benedict Cumberbatch as she walked onto the stage.

Glenn got down on one knee to present his partner with a ring and said: "Jan. I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?"

Leslie later hailed the proposal as being the "best speech ever" on Twitter and hoped it had given future suitors an idea.

The 'Ghostbusters' star said in a video she shared: "First of all, the man that's gonna be with me, is gonna propose to me on the Emmys. If you don't do that, you ain't serious about our love. Real talk, nah, nah."

While Jan said yes to Glenn, Lead Actor in a Drama Series winner Matthew Rhys admitted in his acceptance speech that his partner and 'Americans' co-star Keri Russell had warned him off following the director's gesture.

He said: "To the woman who truly got me this award who just stands in front of me every day and puts up with me she said, 'If you propose to me I will punch you clean in the mouth,' I don't have the words, I don't have the time, none of which do you justice...more to come, thank you."
