Emma Stone thinks there's no such thing as "normal"

The Academy Award-winning actress stars in the new Netflix series 'Maniac', in which her character, Annie Landsberg, obsesses unhealthily about her imperfect relationships with her mother and sister

Asked whether she hopes the film will address the social stigma that surrounds mental illness, Emma explained: "I would hope in general, in the world, we understand that there is no 'normal'.

"People go through all sorts of things and if you need a pill to help balance the way your chemistry works, fine. If you need to go to therapy, fine. But it's about human connection at the end of the day."

Emma, 29, appears in the series alongside her former 'Superbad' co-star Johah Hill.

Although the actress thinks it's important to discuss mental health-related issues, she's insisted the series isn't intended to make a "big statement".

She told the Irish News newspaper: "I think the conversation about mental health is very important.

"What Annie has been through or what Owen [Jonah's character] has been through and what they're dealing with mentally, I thought that was important.

"But I don't know that the intention was to make a big statement about mental health, per se."

Despite her own success, Emma previously insisted her friends and family would never allow her to get carried away with fame.

The actress joked that they would kick her "in the shins" if she was to become big-headed.

Reflecting on the impact of her success, Emma said: "I am blessed with a great family and great people around me.

"They would be able to kick me in the shins if I ever for one minute got lost up in the clouds. I've been really lucky in that sense."
