The 14-time major champion leads by three shots after a five-under 65 and could have been further clear if not for two bogeys.
The last time Woods led after three rounds was the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone, his last career victory.
Woods started devastatingly hot, sitting six-under for the day through seven holes.
He says he got off to a nice start and made some good putts.
