25 September 2018
Modric has won the title for the first time, on the back of starring efforts for Croatia and Real Madrid.
National team coaches, captains and media representatives get the chance to vote for their top three players.
Modric didn't feature in All Whites captain Winston Reid's top three which went to Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and French defender Rafael Varane .
All Whites coach Fritz Schmid and New Zealand Herald writer Michael Burgess both chose Modric as their first vote.
Modric says it's a special award and shows everyone can become the best with hard work, dedication and belief.
