The 2014 world champion single sculler has been included in New Zealand Rowing's summer squad, with an eye to qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
After finishing fourth at the London and Rio Olympics, Twigg says she left rowing and thought she wouldn't be back.
She says she wanted to pursue other things, but has since realised being an athlete is a privilege and she wants to continue while she's still young.
Emma Twigg says she's aiming for the single sculls seat currently occupied by Hannah Osbourne, but would be happy to join a crew if that's where she fits best.
2016 Olympians Eve Macfarlane and Sophie Mackenzie have also rejoined the squad after a two year hiatus.
