The world number 14 ranked Kiwi doubles player and South African partner Raven Klaasen have beaten Argentine Diego Schwartzman and American Steve Johnson 7-5 6-2 to reach the second round at the Japan Open.
Venus and Klaasen are currently 7th in the race for the ATP finals, with the top eight teams after next month's Paris Masters qualifying.
However complicating matters for the Kiwi is his partner Sally is expecting their first child later this month and it's likely to see Venus miss some ATP tournaments, and valuable ranking points.
