A new study has looked at Maori's views on the justice system
3 October 2018
Fourth year University of Otago medical students and ActionStation conducted the research project called "They're Our Whanau".
50 percent of the prison population are Maori, despite comprising just 14.9 percent of the country's population.
The majority of those interviewed believed racism and colonisation are the reasons there are more Maori in prisons.
They also believe drivers behind the incarceration rates are poverty, survival tactics and mental health.
