5 October 2018
It's eight years next month since 29 men lost their lives in the disaster.
Christchurch Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Collins is representing police in the Pike River Recover Agency as a forensic and investigation planner officer.
He says police staff will only go in if the mine is safe - and the disaster victim identification staff, specialist search groups, forensic photographers will be trained by mines rescue service.
Collins says if the mine can't be made safe, police will train underground experts in forensic scene work.
