Unions say today's the day Maori women effectively begin working for free

Unions say today's the day Maori women effectively begin working for free, for the rest of the year

The Council of Trade Unions says Maori women earn and average of 24-dollars-26 an hour, compared with almost 32-dollars an hour for New Zealand men.

The CTU's Laures Park says it's an illustration of the gender pay gap.

Park says Maori women's work has been undervalued and ignored since colonisation.

She says employers, government and unions must take responsibility to end the illegal pay injustice inflicted on Wahine Maori.
