Leyton-Leigh Tokorangi Alderson died as a result of injuries when he crashed into a bridge in Wainuiomata in June 2015.
Two others in the car survived the crash.
It was previously unclear if Alderson or a friend was driving - but a coronial investigation concluded it was Alderson who lost control and crashed.
Coroner Scott says Alderson had twice the legal blood limit and also had cannabis in his system.
