A massive illegal haul of paua has been uncovered in Taranaki
15 October 2018
MPI fishery officers and police last week stopped and inspected cars travelling on State Highway 45 near Okato.
MPI spokesman Jason Howat says the south Taranaki coastline's isolation and vastness make it an area with a high risk of offending.
He says four people were found with more than 700 paua, the majority undersized.
Their vehicle was seized and they will likely face serious charges.
Officers returned all of the shellfish to the sea.
A number of people also received warnings and infringements.
