The planned cull of tahr is set to begin the Southern Alps on Thursday
The planned cull of tahr is set to begin the Southern Alps on Thursday, weather permitting
16 October 2018
It follows further consultation between DOC and hunters.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says the target of controlling 10 thousand Himalayan tahr over the next eight months remains - but the revised plan is a staged operation with 6000 animals being culled before the middle of next month.
She says DOC will then assess how to achieve the target of 10-thousand by August next year.
Sage is adamant there is no plan to completely eradicate tahr.
She says after the cull thousands will still be available to hunt.
Tahr numbers have exploded to the point DoC says they're destroying native plants.
