The Ohau Point stopping area is opening this morning, and will let drivers view beaches and wildlife up close.
NZTA's Colin Knapps says the area was badly damaged by the 2016 earthquake.
He says the ground was pushed up between four and six metres - but this has allowed native seals to get much closer to the road.
Ohau Point is just the first in a number of planned safe stopping areas that will open along State Highway 1.
