Scott McLaughlin has battled a damaged car to take the lead in the Supercars championship on the Gold Coast

Scott McLaughlin has battled a damaged car to take the lead in the Supercars championship on the Gold Coast

The Kiwi driver and co-driver Alex Premat have finished fifth in the first 300-kilometre race of the weekend.

With main rival and fellow Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen only managing 10th, McLaughlin has reclaimed the series' lead by 14 points.

McLaughlin says he had to nurse the car home as something wasn't quite right in the later parts of the race.

He says it was a good result, but they'll now have to look at the car to get it right for the rest of the weekend.

    Chaz Mostert won the race.

The second 300-kilometre sprint gets underway at 5.25pm tonight.
