Matthew Broderick has landed a temporary role in 'The Conners'

The 56-year-old actor has been cast as a love interest for Jackie, with Matthew set to make his first appearance on the sitcom during the upcoming Halloween episode

A logline for the episode - which will be broadcast on October 30 and has been titled 'There Won't Be Blood' - reads: "It's Halloween, the favourite time of year for the Conners, but an email from the school banning certain costumes, including Mark's, sets off an argument between Dan and Darlene.

"Jackie introduces someone new to the family at the Halloween party and insists that Dan vet him, only to immediately wish that she hadn't, on an all-new episode of 'The Conners'."

The sitcom is a spin-off of 'Roseanne', which was axed by ABC in the wake of Roseanne Barr's offensive tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former US President Barack Obama.

Roseanne - who doesn't appear in 'The Conners' - recently bemoaned the "grim and morbid" death of her on-screen character.

In a statement, Roseanne and her mentor Rabbi Shmuley Boteach said: "That [the character's death] was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.

"This was a choice the network did not have to make.

"'Roseanne' was the only show on television that directly addressed the deep divisions threatening the very fabric of our society. Specifically, the show promoted the message that love and respect for one another's personhood should transcend differences in background and ideological discord.

"The show brought together characters of different political persuasions and ethnic backgrounds in one, unified family, a rarity in modern American entertainment. Above all else, the show celebrated a strong, matriarchal woman in a leading role, something we need more of in our country."
