Iain Wilson's pleaded guilty to one charge under the Maritime Transport Act of causing unnecessary danger.
He was sentenced at the Wellington District Court yesterday.
Last April, Wilson was the skipper of the City Cat ferry that grounded on a rock at Karaka Bay with 18 passengers and crew on board.
It was found he didn't have the correct navigational charts, didn't maintain proper look-out and had been repeatedly travelling at excessive speed.
