The exam was a clinic where third-year medical students were tested on practical skills.
The University of Otago's dean of medicine Barry Taylor says they discovered students who had already taken the exam were communicating with those still waiting.
He says it gives those students an advantage and is expressly forbidden.
Taylor says the students allegedly involved will be interviewed - but any punishment is yet to be decided.
