The decision to start charging Wellingtonians to park on the weekends is being hailed a success

In the 10 weeks since the charges were introduced, Wellington City Council has collected more than 600-thousand dollars in revenue.
At the same time, weekend retail spending figures have held steady and carpark turnover has improved.
Transport portfolio lead Chris Calvi-Freeman says the fees have achieved everything they hoped for.
He says the 600-thousand dollars isn't a revenue grab but money that would otherwise be hiked onto rates.
