Nineteen-year-old Rouxle Le Roux hit Air Force cadet Nathan Kraatskow at an Auckland intersection in May.
She had been drinking wine and smoking cannabis earlier in the day.
On Friday she was sentenced to 11 months home detention, and 250 hours of community work.
Since then, more than 84 thousand people have signed a petition calling for a tougher sentence.
Victim advocate Ruth Money hopes the Crown is already writing up its appeal.
