The Kiwi's outwitted world number 25 Hyeon Chung in straight sets to advance at the tournament for the first time.
Statham's coach Gary Swinkels says his charge has played a lot of Koreans so they looked for a pattern.
He says a lot of them are strong out of the corners, but the middle of court was where they won as Chung didn't have the angles to work with.
Statham faces German Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round this evening.
Michael Venus and his partner Raven Klaasen have made it to the second round of the doubles.
