Both men's finalists Cameron Norrie and Tennys Sandgren have lost, as has women's champion Julia Goerges
Semi-finalist Jan Lennard Struff also exited, as did Auckland top seed John Isner.
However defending champions Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki had no problems.
Federer's dispatched Denis Istomin in straight sets.
He says he protected his serve well, and was always in the lead which allowed him to "freeswing".
Andy Murray's been beaten by Roberto Bautista Agut, in what could be the final match of his career as he battles a hip injury.
