Doctors who inappropriately prescribe and abuse drugs rarely face disciplinary action
18 January 2019
A review by Auckland University shows only 24 doctors faced action between 1997 and 2016.
Most of the doctors were thought to have prescribed drugs for their own use.
Lead researcher, Dr Katharine Wallis, says drug dependence should be treated as a health issue first, rather than a crime ... and disciplinarily action should be the last resort.
She says more needs to be done to encourage doctors with dependency issues to get help.
