A massive aerial assault is taking place to get a huge fire near Nelson under control
6 February 2019
It started in Pigeon Valley and has spread to nearly 19 hundred hectares and 150 properties have been evacuated.
Fire and Emergency says the extreme behaviour of the fire meant there was no way crews could stop it last night, so people were shifted out of harm's way.
Incident Controller Ian Reade says planes are being used to fight the fire today.
He says retardant containment lines are being started and heavy machinery is being used to put fire breaks.
Ian Reade says a dozen fresh fire crews are on deck.
