Paddy Jonathan Woods was accused of murdering a Wellington transgender woman in February last year.
21-year-old Zena Campbell was found dead in a car in Aro Valley after attending a party the night before.
Justice David Collins says a jury could not reasonably be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Woods caused her death.
He's based the decision on evidence from a pathologist who has told the court evidence of compression to Zena's neck cannot confidently be said to have caused her death.
