The family of Nicky Stevens thinks Waikato District Health Board has asked for an inquiry into their son's death, to avoid coughing up compensation

The family of Nicky Stevens thinks Waikato District Health Board has asked for an inquiry into their son's death, to avoid coughing up compensation

The body of the 21-year-old was found in the Waikato River three days after leaving a mental health unit unescorted in March 2015.

Coroner Wallace Bain says Stevens' death could have been avoided.

The DHB says its insurer has instructed the DHB's lawyer to raise concerns about the Coroner's process with the Solicitor-General.

Nicky Stevens's mum, Jane, says the DHB is spending more and more money fighting this.

She says it seems the DHB is just trying to cover itself again, but the family needs to move on and allow their son to rest in peace.
