The defending champions have hung on for a 24-22 victory, after leading 12-3 at half-time.
Despite sneaking home, Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says they need to be a lot more disciplined.
He says they were poor at times, but it's probably reflective of their past openers where they've had tight battles and been able to get over the line.
Meanwhile, a late Du'Plessis Kirifi try has given the Hurricanes a 20-19 win over the Waratahs in Sydney.
