A team of 35 biosecurity staff is on the ground in Devonport, putting out hundreds of traps looking for more of the insects.
Bug man Ruud Kleinpaste (-pastor) says it's important to find out how the bug got into New Zealand.
He says one Queensland fruit fly may not mean too much, but the Ministry can not take any risks.
Kleinpaste says they need to find out where it came from, what its host was and if there are any more.
