NZEI research has found principals are seriously under the pump.
It has found a quarter of primary principals and school leaders work more than 61 hours per week.
And it says the teacher shortage is adding to the problem - creating extra work for school leaders working to fill vacancies.
Principal Margie Sutherland, from a primary school outside Palmerston North, has resigned over her job's impact on her mental health
Sutherland says, as a teaching principal, she was the sole adult on site most of the week, teaching 25 students.
