Police were called to Halfway Bay Station, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, at 2.30pm.
They say the vehicle rolled from a farm track.
A winch was needed to lift the patient into a rescue helicopter.
In another serious accident, police and St John ambulance went to a farm in the central Hawke's Bay town of Omakere at around 4.45pm today.
This apparently involved a man operating a bulldozer.
Work Safe will be investigating the accident but the health status of the male driver is not known.
