Blues and North Harbour prop Michael Tamoaieta...just beginning his professional career at 23 years old.. died suddenly yesterday.
Blues Chief Executive Michael Redman says the Blues are stunned by the news and deeply saddened at his death.
New Zealand Rugby chief Steve Tew has offered the organisation's condolences.
He says Michael, known by his mates as Mikey T, was a valued member of the Blues and North Harbour rugby environments and had been part of the New Zealand Secondary Schools team.
Tamoaieta's family have asked for privacy as they deal with the shock of his death.
He leaves a partner and a young daughter Aihana
