The visitors are 80 for three, needing 141 runs to make New Zealand bat again on the final day.
Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls' record 216 for the fourth wicket against Bangladesh led the way as part of their 432 for six declared.
Taylor made 200, his third test double century, and Nicholls 107, his fifth ton.
Trent Boult scythed through the top order including bowling in-form opener Tamim Iqbal off the second ball of the innings.
One concern for New Zealand is the fitness of captain Kane Williamson who had scans on his left shoulder after falling awkwardly in the gully yesterday.
