44-year-old Philip Arps had his application for bail denied when he appeared in Christchurch.
He'll reappear on April 15.
Herald reporter, Issac Davison, says Arps showed no emotion, and there was a large international media presence in the courtroom.
An 18-year-old man is also being held in custody on charges of sharing the shooting footage and "inciting extreme violence".
