A Lower Hutt man found with illegal guns in his house has been sentenced to community detention

A Lower Hutt man found with illegal guns in his house has been sentenced to community detention

Police carried out a search warrant at 41-year-old Avau Venu's home late last year.

They didn't find what they were looking for, but they did uncover two weapons, including an AR15-style assault rifle in the garage, wrapped in a scarf.

Venu doesn't hold a firearms licence.

Judge Craig Thompson made note of last week's terror attack during his sentencing at the Hutt Valley District Court this afternoon, saying it emphasises a concern about firearms.

The court heard Venu had attended a vigil for the victims of the Christchurch shootings.

He was sentenced to six months community detention.

The guns and ammunition will be destroyed.
