Drivers are being warned to take extra care in the South Island, as bad weather hits

The NZ Transport Agency says significant falls are expected up the west coast, and potentially into Arthur's Pass area.
The heaviest rainfall is expected between six o'clock this morning and two this afternoon.
NZTA Journey Manager Peter Brown says people should keep their speed down and stay off the roads if they can.
Brown says motorists should also keep an eye out for surface flooding and possible slips.
