A West Coast council is kicking into high gear as the region is hammered by heavy rain

The Westland District Council has activated its emergency operations centre - and is positioning staff and equipment across the district.
It says the Fox Hills are currently closed due to two slips at the Omoeroa Bluffs - and there is significant surface flooding, with water over the road in some places.
River levels are also continuing to rise.
The council says people should avoid travelling through the district if possible.
It says locals should make sure they have a getaway kit ready - just in case they have to leave in a hurry.
